Living History at the Mansion: From a Grand Wedding Present to Your Next Memory

Updated: Jul 27

Every building has walls, but not every building has a soul. At the Historic Hostess House, history isn't something trapped behind velvet ropes or frozen under glass—it is a living, breathing tradition that continues with every conversation, shared meal, and celebration held under our roof.

In this special installment of our Mansion History series, we are featuring an episode from WIWU’s Crossroads Indiana series. This guided tour explores the remarkable origins of our historic landmark—and how a home built for love became a sanctuary for community connection.

🏛️ A Legacy of Connection

A Grand Gesture of Love

Long before it was a public landmark, the mansion began as a grand romantic gesture: built as an extraordinary wedding gift for Peggy. Crafted with meticulous architectural detail, it was designed from day one to be a sanctuary for family, warmth, and hospitality.

A Space of Their Own

In an era when local husbands gathered exclusively at the male-only Aero Club, a visionary group of local women decided it was time to create a space for female leadership and civic gathering. Banding together as a committee, they purchased the historic residence and transformed it into the Hostess House—ensuring the home would forever belong to the community.

Preserved Elegance: Peggy’s Study

A standout highlight of the tour is Peggy’s Study. Maintained with historical integrity, this preserved room offers a rare, intimate glimpse into the past, allowing visitors to stand in the exact footprint where the mansion's original stories were written.
